The Blue Ridge in Watermedia

Artist David Davis captures the Blue Ridge from nature. Working in plein air and the studio, David translates his experiences in the Southern Appalachian Mountains of NC and from his travels into works of art.

The work

Paintings that hold the High Country's weather.

Working in watercolor and mixed watermedia, David chases the moments that don't sit still — mist lifting off a ridge, the minute after the sun drops below the mountainside, a storm crossing an open field.

Up close, the paintings break into abstract color and texture: granulating washes, bleeding edges, and brushwork that rewards standing a little too close. From across a room they resolve into a snapshot of the landscape. Each work is original, hand painted out in nature or in the artist's studio in Boone, North Carolina.
